This session of the TSI Knowledge Network brought together Facial Palsy UK and The Starfish Way to share insights into the ways their organisations support individuals through specialist services, education, and community-focused programmes. The session provided an opportunity to learn more about how both organisations empower people to overcome challenges, build confidence, and improve their wellbeing.

Both organisations highlighted the importance of person-centred support and creating opportunities for individuals to thrive. From raising awareness and providing support for people affected by facial palsy to helping young people with additional support needs develop confidence through outdoor learning and achievement programmes, the session showcased the diverse and meaningful ways the third sector is making a positive difference within communities.

About:

The Starfish Way is an organisation dedicated to supporting young people with additional support needs (ASN) to build confidence, develop new skills, and achieve positive outcomes through outdoor learning and personalised programmes. Working with young people aged 5-25, they provide opportunities to develop resilience, independence, and employability while encouraging participants to reach their full potential through meaningful experiences and recognised achievement awards.

Highlight – Unlocking Positive Futures Through Outdoor Learning

During the session, The Starfish Way shared an overview of their flagship 25-week programme and the positive impact it has on young people with additional support needs. Their approach combines outdoor learning, practical activities, mentoring, and nationally recognised awards to help participants develop confidence, teamwork, communication, and life skills. The session highlighted how meaningful experiences in nature and supportive relationships can help overcome barriers, promote wellbeing, and create positive pathways into education, volunteering, and employment.

Facial Palsy Support Group

About:

Facial Palsy UK is the UK’s national charity supporting people affected by facial palsy, whatever the cause. The charity provides trusted information, practical guidance, and emotional support for individuals, families, carers, and healthcare professionals. Alongside support services, Facial Palsy UK works to raise awareness, improve access to specialist treatment, and champion better understanding of the physical, emotional, and psychological impact of facial palsy.

During the session, Facial Palsy UK shared an overview of the wide-ranging impact facial palsy can have on everyday life, from physical challenges with speaking, eating and facial movement to the emotional effects of anxiety, confidence, and social isolation. The presentation highlighted the charity’s commitment to ensuring that everyone affected by facial palsy has access to reliable information, peer support, and appropriate treatment. The session also showcased the value of local and online support groups, awareness campaigns, and ongoing work to improve services and understanding across the UK.
