Adapting Together: Supporting Families Through CAMHS Pathway Changes

We are aware of the recent changes introduced to the CAMHS neurodevelopmental (ND) pathway in Tayside due to long waiting times for assessments. CAMHS in NHS Tayside provides two pathways: one for mental health conditions and another for neurodevelopmental conditions. The ND pathway has experienced significant delays due to a sharp increase in referrals (up 400%) and a shortage of specialists.

In response, a new, collaborative approach is being introduced – bringing together clinical teams, GPs, schools, social services, and third sector partners. The focus is shifting from diagnosis-led support to a more flexible, needs-based model. This change aims to ensure that children and young people can access the support they need more quickly, without the requirement for a formal diagnosis.

We recognise that this shift may raise concerns for some families, particularly around the implications of not receiving a diagnosis. However, families will still have access to a range of supports, including school support plans and external services.

At TSI (Perth & Kinross), we are actively monitoring these developments and are here to support and listen to third sector organisations navigating the impact of these changes. We know that many organisations in our community play a vital role in supporting families, and we are committed to helping you adapt and respond during this time of transition.

If your organisation has concerns, questions, or insights to share, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. Together, we can work towards ensuring that no child or family is left without the support they need
